Catherine Jaën MW has joined Lea & Sandeman as head of buying as the independent London merchant continues to invest in its fine wine division.
Formerly buying director at Lay & Wheeler, Jaën will initially take responsibility for Burgundy, working alongside Charles Lea, David Porter and Derek Robertson.
She offers an impressive and diverse range of industry experience, including previously held roles at Goedhuis & Co and Robert Rolls & Co.
Jaën became a Master of Wine in 2017 and has been a member of the specialist Burgfest tasting group for nine years.
According to Lea & Sandeman: “Jaën brings hands-on winemaking experience alongside significant commercial knowledge of the UK market.
“She has completed seven vintages in Burgundy, including a full year working in the vineyards and cellar at Domaine Comte Armand in Pommard. In addition, she also worked harvests and in cellars across Sancerre, Bordeaux, Friuli, Australia and New Zealand.”
Owner Charles Lea said he had first encountered Jaën while she was working at Domaine Comte Armand and has followed her career ever since.
“She brings with her not only crucial regional, commercial and merchandising expertise, but also a deep appreciation for the work of winemaking– something that is particularly important to us as a business so in touch with our producers,” he said.
Meanwhile, the independent has also strengthened its London on-trade team with the appointment of Isabelle Strutt.
She joins from Swig, having previously worked as a sommelier at Michelin-starred restaurants and private members’ clubs.
Phil Weeks, On-Trade sales director, commented: “Isabelle is already a real asset to our team across the capital and will help us continue to deliver the personal, knowledgeable and smooth service that our customers have come to expect.”
