Following the success of 2010's Sommelier Cup, Wines of South Africa is holding another competition to find a sommelier with a superior knowledge of the country's wines.

Preliminary heats are currently under way in the competing nations of Belgium, Canada, China, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Sweden and the US, and 12 semi-finalists will be selected to take part in the final in South Africa in October.

The semi-finalists will be flown to the South African Winelands prior to the final, where they will meet winemakers and explore the diversity among the region's wines.

The winner of the previous WOSA Sommelier Cup, Christopher Bates from the US, went on to win Concours International des Jeunes Best Young Sommelier 2012 and Guild of Sommelier Top/Somm 2013, and recently became a Master Sommelier.

The judging panel for the finals will include Master Sommelier Ronan Sayburn of the UK, who heads the wine division of the Dorchester Collection; Totte Steneby, former winner of both the Swedish and the Nordic Sommelier Championships; Neil Grant, chairman of the South African Sommelier Association; Higgo Jacobs, a taster for the authoritative Platter's South African Wine Guide and member of SASA; and Jörg Pfützner, also a taster for the Platter guide, SASA member and consulting wine editor at G&W.
