Published:  26 February, 2013

South African wine producer Charles Back has opened his new Spice Route destination in Paarl, in a bid to introduce tourists to his Swartland range of Spice Route wines.

Located on its Paarl farm, the third generation Fairview wine and cheese producer who also owns The Goats do Roam Wine Company as well as the The Spice Route Winery aims to give local and international visitors a sensory journey to those with a love for authenticity and craftsmanship.

The development consists of a Spice Route Tasting Room where its wines can be enjoyed in a relaxed and informal rustic underground tasting room or outside under the pergola.

There is also a Spice Route Restaurant that aims to take the visitor on a culinary journey. It explores the fusion of traditional South African cooking with the various influences of cooking cultures along the Spice Route, from Europe to the East and the places that once formed the empire of the Dutch East India Company. Each dish is carefully crafted and prepared to complement its wines.

Back said: "The vision for Spice Route is to offer local and international tourists a selection of hand-picked artisanal producers to share their knowledge, who put as much thought, skill and passion into their products as the Spice Route winemaker, Charl du Plessis, does when crafting his wines."

The farm also comprises: DV Artisan Chocolate, Roastery and Espresso Bar, the Cape Brewing Company which offers a wide range of beers using only the finest ingredients,The Barley & Biltong Emporium; a beer garden with a local twist and Wilderer's Distillery & La Grapparia Restaurant.
