Vinopolis opens large-scale Italian restaurant complex

Vinopolis has opened a large-scale Italian restaurant, bakery and bar adjacent to its existing Borough market premises in south London.

Del Mercato Italian Ristorante, the more casual Trattoria, Bakery Panificio and Del Mercato Bar, which take up 3,000 square feet, are owned by the directors of Vinopolis and  "showcase a broad selection of regional Italian food and wine". The head chef is Stefano Motta, previously from Latium and head chef at Briciole and Restaurant SD26 in New York."

The site occupies a series of vaulted railway buildings that were once the yard of a tool hire company. They were transformed by architects Greig & Stephenson and the interior features exposed brickwork, steel and glass.

Dishes at the 70-cover Ristorante include seared tuna in guanciale with aubergine cream, rocket, endive and olive dressing; and Tagliolini with crab meat, spring onions, sweet chilli and lime. Prices will range from £7.50-£10.50 for antipasti, £7-£13.50 for pastas, £14-£21 for main courses, and £4.50-£7.50 for desserts.

The wine list at Del Mercato will comprise approximately 50 bins, primarily focused on regional Italian selections, with a more premium offering in the Ristorante. Prices start at £16.95 for a bottle, with 15 available by the glass (from £4.35).

Trattoria dishes will include pizza and dishes like swordfish meatballs with tomato, spring onion and lemon. Prices are £5.50-£12 for pizzas and £9-£14 for mains.

Fresh bread from the bakery includes ciabatta, rosemary bread and focaccia.

Del Mercato Bar, which is situated on Park Street, will serve coffee, Italian aperitifs including Aperol Spritzer, Negroni, Rossini and Bellini, as well as Prosecco and wine.
