More pubs selling alcohol round the clock

The number of pubs and bars with 24-hour alcohol licences has risen from 845 to 946 in the past year.

The number of pubs and bars with 24-hour alcohol licences has risen from 845 to 946 in the past year.

The 12% increase has been reported by Sweet & Maxwell, a publisher of legal information.

The number of off-trade outlets with round-the-clock licences increased by 7% to 1,659, it added.

The figures coincide with reduced trade for nightclubs and a fall in the number of drinks licences at non-profit making clubs.

Sweet & Maxwell said the increase in 24-hour licences showed that pub operators were looking for ways of counteracting the slump in leisure spending.
