Myliko Wines adopts carbon offsetting

Myliko Wines, the UK merchant, has announced its new carbon offsetting scheme.

The company, which imports wines from countries including Hungary and South Africa, will plant trees in an attempt to offset the emissions caused by transporting its products to the UK.

Santa Alicia, the International Wine and Spirit Competition's Chilean wine producer of the year 2007 and one of Myliko's partners, has already given its backing to the new plan.

Nish Kotecha, Myliko director, said: "We are actively trying to lead the way in engineering greener supply routes, limiting the impact on the environment from production through to shipment and distribution across the UK."

Myliko recently announced a partnership with JF Hillebrand to shift the transportation of its Hungarian imports by rail and sea to reduce CO2 emissions in the logistical process.

A number of other wine producers have committed to this carbon offsetting scheme. These include: Nagyrede Estate and Torley Winery in Hungary; the Bovlei Winery; Baarsma Group and Kotbro in South Africa; Casas del Bosque in Chile; Covila in Rioja and Nugan Estate in Australia.
