The second competition for the Coupe des Grands Crus de St-Emilion will be held in the town on Saturday 15 September. The biennial competition, introduced in 1999, is organised by the Syndicat Viticole de St-Emilion, and involves a blind tasting of grands crus (excluding grands crus classs), two by two. Consistency across the 1996-98 vintages, as well as quality, will be rewarded by the judges, who include French and non-French journalists, brokers, ngociants, sommeliers and winemakers. The cup winner in 1999 was Chteau Valandraud.
