Bancroft expands organic menu

Published:  08 May, 2019

Bancroft Wines has expanded its organic menu with the addition of Chilean Nuevo Mundo.

Taking place with immediate effect, the deal sees Bancroft become the exclusive UK agent for Nuevo Mundo - a project belonging to the De Martino family in Isla de Maipo, in the heart of the Maipo Valley in Chile.

The De Martino family has been farming this vineyard since 1934 and are known for their pioneering approach to sustainable viticulture. Today the estate is led by fourth generation owners Sebastian and Marco Antonio De Martino.

The latest addition, which joins Bancroft’s significant selection of organic certified family-run producers, reflects the company’s renewed focus on organic and sustainable wines, as well as its “emphasis on family and quality”.

“Nuevo Mundo’s fantastic wines are the perfect fit for our portfolio and we are thrilled to be partnering with the De Martino family, who I have long admired and who are true pioneers in the Chilean wine industry,” said Bancroft’s buying director Barney Davis.

Nuevo Mundo’s vineyards became officially certified as organic in 2001, with their commitment to sustainability going beyond organic farming; water management is a top priority in the vineyards, and all water used in production is treated so that it can be reutilised.

In the winery the aim is to convey the vineyards in the purest way. Spontaneous fermentations are carried out using indigenous yeast and avoiding the addition of any cultured yeasts or enzymes, as well as corrections of any sort. Only neutral vessels such as cement, stainless steel and used barrels are used for ageing of their Sauvignon Blanc, Carmenere and Cabernet Sauvignon wines.

Sebastian De Martino said: "In Bancroft Wines we have found a partner that not only understands the importance of organic farming and family domaines, but also one that recognises the dynamics of a changing market.”
