Costers del Segre DO unveils new image

Published:  04 June, 2018

Costers del Segre, the Spanish Denominación de Origen (DO) for wines located in the province of Lleida, has unveiled a new image marking the first overhaul in 18 years.

The updated image had been designed to represent the “essence of modernity and innovation that is so characteristic of the DO”, said Costers del Segre.

“The new image symbolises the rich diversity of a territory in which wines from seven different landscapes co-exist that all share a common origin: poor soil and a continental climate with a Mediterranean influence,” said president Xavier Farré.

In addition to not representing the essence of modernity and innovation characteristic of the DO, nor did the old image – implemented in 2000 - represent the style of its wines with the barrel, he added.

“Wood techniques are used less and less and have become too generic in the world of wine; it no longer added value to the DO,” he said, adding the colour green had been introduced in a nod to the Spanish territory’s high level of commitment to sustainability - one of its identifying differential values.

The Costers del Segre DO has a total of 4,000 hectares of vineyards and 37 wineries, with 80% of the region’s production part of a pioneering programme in Spain that works to ensure sustainable grape vine cultivation and good practices in the social, environmental and economic spheres.

The region includes the central part of the Segre river basin between the Pyrenees and the Prades mountain range.
