ASDA GOES TWO BY TWO IN WINE BUYING SHUFFLE

Published:  23 July, 2008

Asda has split its four-strong wine buying department into two teams of two - selectors and buyers. The new structure - similar to that at Tesco's - means that its wine specialists, the selectors, will spend more time on improving quality, developing the upper end of the range and new product development. The buyers will look more closely at the commercial aspects, such as stock availability, shipments and promotions. The new system frees up the selectors to spend more time doing what they do best,' said a spokesperson for Asda. Sorting out problems like availability are important, but they can take up an awful lot of time that could be better spent elsewhere. The new system also means you don't get all the buyers speaking to suppliers independently about similar things.' Tara Neil and Sara Brook are the selectors, with Martha Rudd and Russell Smith the buyers. Steve Dancer remains in overall control of the BWS category.
