Jeff Clarke appointed chief winemaker at Ara Wines

Published:  08 March, 2011

Jeff Clarke has been appointed as chief winemaker at Marlborough's premier single-vineyard producer, Ara Wines.

Clarke was recognised as "International White Winemaker of the Year" in 1999 at the London International Wine Challenge and worked for Montana Wines for 17 years.

He has had a significant role in the continued development of the now world famous Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc wine style and has helped drive the development of New Zealand Pinot Noir and sparkling wines and Pinot Gris.

In his new role, Jeff will use his extensive experience in building premium wine brands to bring the best out of Ara's unique Southern Valley's terroir.

Christine Pears, chief executive of Ara, said: "After focusing primarily on the vineyard for the first few years, it is a logical step for us to make sure we have the best winemaking expertise on board. There are few, if any, winemakers in New Zealand with Jeff's outstanding track record and wealth of experience."

He will replace Dr Damian Martin.
