Surge in prices at Beaune wine auction

The Hospices de Beaune auction in Burgundy has given local producers renewed optimism.

The Hospices de Beaune auction in Burgundy has given local producers renewed optimism.

Prices in the charity auction on Sunday were up by more than 20%, helped by a record bid of €400,000 for the president's barrel, containing 500 litres of wine.

The auction, the 150th in the event's history, came at a time when Burgundy officials say they are detecting increased overseas interest in their product. This is coming from established markets like the US and the UK, but also from China - a country more readily associated with Bordeaux imports.

The Hospices de Beaune auction, conducted at the Hotel-Dieu in the centre of the town, raises money for cancer research.
