AUSTRIA SHINES IN COMPARISON

Published:  23 July, 2008

Austrian wines took seven of the top ten places at a tasting held last month featuring Chardonnays from around the world and Austria's Grner Veltliner. Organised by fine wine dealer Jan-Erik Paulson and hosted by Jancis Robinson MW and Harpers' Tim Atkin MW, the tasting pitted the Austrian wines alongside prestigious Chardonnays from Burgundy, California and Australia. Paulson said: The greatest Grner Veltliners and the greatest Chardonnays can have similar characteristics.' The winning wine was 1990 Grner Veltliner Vinothekfllung' Smaragd, Knoll. The highest-placed non-Austrian wine (fifth) was a 1998 Byron Chardonnay from Nielson Vineyards, California.
