Castel buys Barton & Guestier

Published:  21 July, 2010

Diageo has sold the Barton & Guestier Bordeaux wine business to French wine giant Castel Freres for an undisclosed sum.

The deal includes brands, inventory and land, including Chateau Magnol.

Direct ownership of B&G had been in the hands of the US subsidiary Diageo Chateau & Estate Wines.

The move follows the announcement in May that Diageo was undertaking a review of its US wine business to focus on core strategic brands such as Beaulieu, Sterling and Chalone.

D&CE will continue to import fine wines to the US from France and other countries and said it remained "strongly committed" to its agency portfolio of wines from Burgundy and Alsace.

Diageo Wines Europe will "continue to grow its involvement in Bordeaux" through its Vignobles Internationaux operation in the region and the British-based fine wine merchant Justerini & Brooks, a statement from the company said.
