Visit Jacob's Creek Orlando Wyndham has officially opened the A$5 million Jacob's Creek visitor centre on the banks of the original creek where Orlando founder Johann Gramp is said to have planted his first vines, in 1847. At the opening, Christian Porta, chairman and chief executive of the Pernod Ricard subsidiary, announced a A$100 million expansion programme for Jacob's Creek, the best-selling Australian brand (Harpers, 11 October). The new centre is said to provide minimum disturbance to the natural vegetation, with a total commitment to innovative, environmentally friendly design'. It boasts energy-saving systems and features using natural and recycled materials, such as internal fabrics made from soft drinks bottles. The Barossa Valley is located in the driest state of the driest inhabited continent, so the centre uses treated rainwater to irrigate trees and nearby vineyards.
