David Smith, founder of Churchill Vintners has died of a heart attack, aged 67.

After selling the company to Berkmann Wine Cellars in 2007, Smith stayed on as managing director until his retirement in April this year.

Berkmann Wine Cellars paid tribute to him saying: "His quiet, unruffled demeanour coupled with his courteous, sensible and efficient manner soon earned him both respect and success.

"His untimely death has been a shock to all those who knew him as a kind and gentle man who will be sorely missed."

Smith  founded Churchill Vintners in 1989, and is said to have quickly established the company as the West Midlands leading independent wine merchant and was said to be the wine merchant most restaurateurs and hoteliers turned to when they were looking for quality in their wine selection and service.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held in Birmingham Cathedral at a later date. Details are still being finalised.

Smith leaves a widow, Lindsay, and three children.
