Prosecco pushes for DOCG status

Published:  22 April, 2009

The regulatory body for the prosecco wine industry is seeking DOCG status from the next vintage - and aiming to become the first vini/viticultural region to gain UNESCO recognition as a word heritage site on its wine credentials alone.

The moves are part of the Consorzio per la Tutela del Vino Prosecco di Conegliano-Valdobbiadene's celebrations to mark 40 years since it achieved DOC status.

The consorzio is now pushing for DOCG status to differentiate itself from a new large "basic" DOC covering eight provinces which will be created under new regulations.

Director Giancarlo Vettorello said: "These are exciting times for Prosecco Conegliano-Valdobbiadene with some major changes that we believe will ensure our position as Italy's leading producer of quality sparkling wine and provide a major boost for wine tourism in the region."

The consorzio recently announced plans for a major consumer PR push in the UK.
