Thierry's Wine Services has become a corporate patron of the Wine & Spirits Education Trust (WSET).

Ian Harris, chief executive of the WSET, announced the new partnership at the WSET Corporate Patrons' dinner in central London last night.

Thierry's joins a the list of 32 other corporate patrons of the WSET. Thierry's has also agreed to instigate the Thierry Cabanne Scholarship Award in memory of its late founder by the same name.

Matthew Dickinson, commercial director of Thierry's Wine Services, said: "We believe that educating both the trade and consumer is absolutely crucial but we like to do so using creativity and innovation.

"We like to think that we inspire our customers and consumers to appreciate the real value of the wine in the bottle, whether at entry level or at the top end of the scale. This is why we are delighted to support the WSET for the next three years, to underline our commitment to inspiration through education."

Adds Ian Harris, chief executive of the WSET: "The Thierry Cabanne Scholarship Award was created with the values of Thierry's late founder firmly in mind. Thierry himself was a firm believer in offering the customer great value for money. He put his money where his mouth was and was a real champion of the consumer.

"He was never a wine snob and believed passionately in making wine as accessible as possible to a wider audience. He was one of the first to recognise the power of the supermarkets and had the foresight to realise that this was where most people would buy their wine."

The Thierry Cabanne Sponsorship Award is open to first or second year WSET students who are not currently working in the wine trade, and consists of a month's work experience at Thierry's.

Although the sponsorship will be tailored to the individual winner's strengths and interests, the successful candidate will be given the opportunity to experience all areas of the wine business including sales, marketing, PR, logistics, retail, as well as producer visits and tastings.
