ELSWOOD BACK AT CHRISTIE'S

Published:  23 July, 2008

David Elswood has been appointed as a director and head of European and Far East Sales at Christie's International Wine Department, following the departure of Thomas Hudson in January. Elswood was at Christie's for 14 years. He has spent the last two as managing director of Winebid Europe, which held its last online auction in June last year. Although Winebid Europe made a net profit in its first year, Elswood told Harpers that 70% of online buyers were based in the US, and that he would not accept the wish of the California-based parent company that he merely source and send European wines there. Elswood said: My experiences in the dotcom field will undoubtedly help further develop Internet strategy, ensuring the department remains at the cutting edge of global wine auctioneering. The department is already supported by christies.com, an excellent website that harbours a growing online absentee-bid community.' Elswood will be responsible for the continued expansion of the European sector, including Christie's first Paris sale, on 3 July.
