Portuguese winery Quinta de Covela has been accepted into "La Renaissance des Appellations", an exclusive international group of organic and biodynamic wine producers.
It is the first time a Portuguese wine estate has been accepted by the group headed up by Nicolas Joly of La Coule de Serrant in Savennieres.
The selection process is thorough and of 35 international candidates in the last year, less than a third were accepted.
Nuno Araujo, Quinta de Covela owner, said: "The high quality and distinctive nature of the Quinta de Covela wines produced on this highly individual terroir for the past 15 years, have convinced both me and my cousin, oenologist Rui Cunha, of the merits of using sustainable agriculture methods throughout the estate. We have found continued benefits to our vines, our wines and to the surrounding environment."
La Renaissance des Appellations extols the benefits of authenticity of terroir and respectful viticulture and vinification.
The first Covela wines to carry official status will be from the 2008 harvest.
