The use of oak chips in the Rioja winemaking process has been banned under newly endorsed industry bylaws.
Legislation altering the current QDO Rioja Regulation and Regulating Council rules was pushed through by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA).
The QDO is the first Spanish appellation to ban the oenological practice.
MAPA's statement also paved the way for the Regulating Council's future plans on encouraging yield limitation plus using part of the harvest to collect qualitative stock - this stock would then be released as soon as a set of pre-arranged conditions were met.
