UK retail sector set for packaging shift

Published:  23 July, 2008

UK: Retailers could see a change to recycling information for packaging on consumer products.

A voluntary scheme being proposed by WRAP and the British Retail Consortium would introduce a more consistent and methodical approach to labelling on both own-label and brand-owner packaging on consumer products.

The consultation published today is open for comments until December 14.

A number of the UK's leading retailers were involved in the working group discussions including Waitrose, Marks and Spencer, Tesco Stores Ltd, Sainsbury's Supermarket and ASDA.

The new label would have three categories; recycled by the vast majority of local authorities, recycled by most local authorities and recycled by only a small number of local authorities.

At present, 71 per cent of England's Local Authorities collect glass bottles and jars via kerbside schemes.
