UK: Basset opens Hotel TerraVina in the New Forest

Gerard Basset, co-founder of the Hotel du Vin group, has opened a boutique hotel in the New Forest, nine miles east of Southaptom.

Hotel TerraVina features eleven bedrooms with their own gardens or roof terraces (160 per night for a room with a roof terrace), a meeting room/private dining room for thirty people, a Californian Wine Country style restaurant, and a vaulted cellar, stocked with around 300 private bin listed wines from where guests can select a special bottle.

The wine list categorises wines by country and style, such as 'fresh & fruity', 'suave & exuberant, and 'steely & mineral.' Included in the list are: Collioure, Cuve Trmadoc, Domaine Madeloc, P Gaillard, Roussillon 2006, 27.50, and "Meshach" Shiraz, Grant Burge, Barossa Valley 2001, 65.00.

Sample menu items include starters, such as poached duck egg, black pudding, mushrooms, and Serrano ham for 5.50. Main dishes, priced between 11 and 15, include roast wild bream, mussels, fennel and dill potato puree, 13.95; and Lamb rump, aubergine, pickled apricots and confit potato, 14.90

Following the sale of the Hotel du Vin chain, the Bassets purchased Hotel TerraVina in early 2007. It was opened on 1 September 2007 after an extensive renovation.

Basset holds Master Sommelier, Master of Wine and Wine MBA awards. Nina is a Fellow of the Institute of Hospitality.
