New PM reshuffles ministers

Published:  23 July, 2008

Caroline Flint has lost her position as health minister after former chancellor of the exchequer, Gordon Brown became Prime Minister last week.

Flint, responsible for implementing the smoking ban and for her work on revised national alcohol reduction strategy, will take up a new ministerial role at the Work and Pensions department.

The responsibilities of the new Department of Health ministers have not yet been announced.

Meanwhile, Gerry Sutcliffe has been confirmed as the new licensing minister. The MP for Bradford South will replace Shaun Woodward.

Sutcliffe, who was the former minister at the Ministry of Justice, will be responsible for licensing, sport, gambling and the national lottery.

He will report to James Purnell, the former licensing minister, who is returning to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport as secretary of state for culture, media and sport.

Sutcliffe was formally the National Pubwatch president. He resigned after he gained a ministerial role in the Department of Trade and Industry in 2003.

Vernon Coaker will remain as Home Office minister.

Baroness Scotland, crime reduction minister, has left the Home Office to take up the role of Attorney General.
