Anne Burchett, MD of Castel UK, has hit back at criticism of multiple retailer Oddbins, and denied that its branches will all be rebranded as Nicolas stores.
Speaking at Vinexpo on Monday 18 June, she also revealed her "annoyance" at the critical reaction to the new Oddbins Selection range and the Castel-owned Nicolas chain, of which there are now 80 in the UK.
When asked if Oddbins would be done away with outright, she replied: "What would be the point? The idea is to keep the Oddbins brand."
She said: "I know Oddbins benefitted from the quirky image, but I've always wondered if "quirky" sells.
"To get it right is extremely difficult. But with Oddbins, you cannot take a risk.
"Oddbins is a business, not a wine trade fantasy, and that's what a lot of people fail to realise.
"Castel has a role to play in the UK, and if we could be allowed to get on with it, it would be nice. Sometimes I really feel that people love to hate us."
