THE GREAT CABERNET CONUNDRUM

Published:  23 July, 2008

Harpers, the International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) and Warren Winiarski, owner of Stag's Leap Wine Cellars in California, are marking the 25th anniversary of the 1976 Paris tasting, with a tasting and forum devoted to Cabernet Sauvignon, the world's favourite red wine grape variety. The Great Cabernet Conundrum' sets out to answer the questions: What constitutes great Cabernet Sauvignon? Has the New World set the standard for Cabernet Sauvignon as we move into the new Millennium? Harpers has brought together a panel of international wine luminaries to discuss two major influences on modern-day Cabernet: 1.The role of the wine critic and the 100-point scale: Has the media overstepped its mandate? 2.Appellation help or hindrance? Our panel includes Winiarski, Jasper Morris MW of Morris & Verdin, Carlos Falco of Marques de Grion, Chris Hatcher of BRL Hardy, Jeff Morgan, journalist, ex-Wine Spectator, and winemaker, and Tim Atkin MW, Harpers' editorial director and The Observer's wine correspondent, plus others yet to be announced. It will take place on Monday 29 October in The Galleria at the Chelsea Village Hotel. The event is strictly by invitation only, so please contact Alison Mann on 020 7575 5629 to check availability.
