White Armagnac recognised

Published:  23 July, 2008

The white eaux-de-vie traditionally produced in the Armagnac region has been awarded its own AOC, known as La Blanche.

White Armagnac has been produced in the region for years, but was never legally recogised as having AOC status. The new La Blanche AOC will have similar quality control regulations to those that govern Armagnac, including all products having to go to a tasting panel for certification.

The region's producers and their interprofessional body,

the Bureau National Interprofessionnel de l'Armagnac (BNIA), have also decided to set up a new organisation, Organisme Agr Armagnac, which will be responsible for the practical control and adherence of the production conditions'.

Other changes to the laws include increased testing and analysis of both traditional Armagnac and La Blanche before it is released to market.
