Symington may take control of Cockburn's

Published:  23 July, 2008

Port producer Symington Family Estates is currently in discussion with Beam Global Spirits & Wine regarding taking over production from rival house Cockburn's.

If the deal goes through, Symington, whose brands include Graham's, Dow's and Warre's, would acquire Cockburn's existing vineyards, wineries and lodges, and then produce Cockburn's Port for Beam Global.

Beam would retain ownership and control of the brand, and would continue to look after marketing, sales and distribution.

Ian Gourlay, Beam Global's senior vice-president of operations and supply chain, said: Symington is a trusted and well-respected name in the Port trade, known for the quality and craftsmanship of its wines and for its leadership at the premium end of the Port market. The two parties will be looking to both maintain and enhance the fine reputation that Cockburn's Ports have enjoyed for nearly two centuries.'

Joint managing director Paul Symington was reluctant to comment on the acquisition, other than to say: This demonstrates my family's total commitment to the future of premium-quality Port and the Douro valley.'

It is hoped that the deal will be completed by the end of the month.
