In addition to adopting a new three-tier classification system (Harpers, 31 August), the Verband Deutscher Prdikatsweingter passed three other important resolutions at its AGM in July. Members agreed to go by the shorter name VDP. Die Prdikatsweingter (VDP. The Prdikat Wine Estates), and to modernise its eagle logo by softening the martial look. "Henceforth, the eagle will sport rounded wings, bear a smaller cluster of grapes, and look less aggressive overall," states the official press release. Members also voted to abstain from the general use of concentration techniques. Estates which wish to carry out experiments may do so, however, under the supervision of a working committee named by the national association, and it was recognised that such techniques "probably will be legalised in future". There is reported to have been unanimous agreement for a ten-year moratorium on the cultivation of genetically engineered grapes, in support of which the association has joined the French-European initiative Terre et Vins du Monde.
