Wine collection destroyed in warehouse fire

Published:  23 July, 2008

Millions of pounds' worth of wine were destroyed in a warehouse fire in California.

It is unknown how the blaze at Wines Central in Vallejo started, but the venue was believed to contain six million bottles, worth around 50 million, reported the San Francisco Chronicle.

The newspaper added that the Wines Central building dates from 1942, once housed U.S. Navy torpedoes and has steel doors and 1-metre-thick concrete walls - which actually hampered fire fighters' efforts.

The Wines Central website says that its facility includes state-of-the-art fire and temperature monitoring systems'.
