SOTHEBY'S SALE NETS 2.6m

Published:  23 July, 2008

Outstanding cellar

A cellar described by Sotheby's as "outstanding", with some of the world's most sought-after wines, was recently sold by the London auction house over two days, netting 2,659,420 - and was 98% sold by value. The cellar was the result of one man's intense passion for top wine. The total makes it the fourth highest-grossing single-owner wine sale at auction worldwide, and the second-most important wine sale at Sotheby's in London since the Andrew Lloyd-Webber collection went under the hammer in May 1997 for 3,692,821. Sotheby's holds the record for any wine sale at auction with The Millennium Wine Cellar, which to date remains unchallenged as the greatest wine cellar in the world. It was sold for 8,842,382 at Sotheby's in New York, in November 1999.
