Families are driving a rise in UK leisure spending, according to a new survey released today.

Family household leisure spending on cinema, theatre and live sporting events was up 23% year on year in October. Households without children spent just 2% more.

Overall growth in leisure spend was up 17% for families, and 4% for those without families.

The Greene King Leisure Spend Tracker also revealed that spending on eating and drinking out have risen significantly. up by 5% and 11% respectively.

Families saw a 14% rise in spend on eating out, compared to 2% for those without kids. Spend on drinking out spend saw a uniform increase of 11%.

Fiona Gunn, Greene King group marketing director, said: "Drinking out, eating out and other leisure increased this month as Brits across the country reached for their wallets to enjoy sporting and festive occasions. 

"Halloween, the closing stages of the Rugby World Cup, Spectre and half term in particular boosted spending as customers continue to benefit from rising real wages."

 The Greene King Leisure Spend Tracker is part of an omnibus questionnaire run on behalf of Greene King by market research consultancy YouGov, with additional analysis by the Trajectory Partnership.

The monthly tracker is based on an online sample of some 4,000 UK adults.
