TOWNSEND DIRECTS BIGGER CONSTELLATION

Published:  23 July, 2008

Constellation Europe has confirmed that the European operation of Robert Mondavi is to close at the end of April. Control of British sales of the Robert Mondavi portfolio, including the Woodbridge, Papio, Robert Mondavi Winery and Private Selection, will be transferred to Constellation Europe's British headquarters in Guildford. Mainland European sales will transfer to Constellation's offices in Haarlem in the Netherlands. As Harpers went to press, the fate of Mondavi's 18 European employees (two sales staff based in the UK and 16 staff based in Mondavi's Frankfurt office) was unclear. They've been briefed and we are currently in discussions with them. There will be some redundancies, although we do not know how many,' a Constellation spokeswoman told Harpers. Constellation also announced that it has promoted Dan Townsend to the newly created role of trading director of the expanded company. Townsend, who was previously managing director of the company's wholesale division, will have responsibility for sales in both the on- and off-trade, and will also be in charge of marketing. His replacement will be announced shortly', according to a company spokeswoman.
