FREIXENET BUYS BODEGA IN RIOJA ALEVESA

Published:  23 July, 2008

By Jack Hibberd

Leading Cava producer Freixenet has bought a bodega in Rioja for approximately e10 million. Bodegas Santamara Lpez is a premium producer based in the medieval wine town of Laguardia in the Rioja Alevesa. It has a winemaking facility of 1,500,00 litres and a barrel cellar with 4,800 casks. It currently produces wine under two main brands: Solar Viejo, which encompasses all quality levels; and Angel Santa Mara, which consists of a Crianza and special selection. The bodega has no current UK distribution. Graham Fortune, Freixenet UK managing director, said: The Freixenet portfolio is no longer just about Cava, we have wines from across Spain.' He added that investment in the bodega is planned.
