Leading US wine critic Robert Parker has criticised the French AOC system, likening it to the Indian caste system'. Speaking at the Vinexpo event in Chicago, Parker said that the AOC system was meaningless to most people: For the average consumer, the Appellation d'Origine Contrle doesn't mean a thing. At the supermarket level, American consumers buy by grape varietals.' He added that to compete with the New World, French wines should be clearly marked with the grape varieties they were made from, and berated companies who went down the gimmicky' route of animal pictures on the label or names such as Fat Bastard.
