Esk Valley winemaker Gordon Russell is to host a virtual winemakers' dinner that will be transmitted from New Zealand to Cornwall via a live super-fast broadband link.
Russell will join diners at the Driftwood Spars pub in St Agnes, Cornwall, live from his own kitchen in Hawkes Bay - a distance of almost 19,000 km and with a 13-hour time difference.
He will be projected onto the wall of the pub to chat with diners, and will introduce six Esk Valley wines that have been selected to match a special menu for the evening.
Russell has visited the Driftwood Spars pub on several occasions during visits to the UK
but this is the first time he has visited via satellite.
He says: "The internet makes it possible to do extraordinary things and makes the world seem a much smaller place. Although I love meeting consumers and visiting Driftwood Spars when I am in the UK, I am very much looking forward to travelling without a plane this time. It will be exciting to be able to greet diners in the UK from my own kitchen."
The dinner is taking place on May 10 at the Driftwood Spars pub in St
Agnes, Cornwall, in partnership with St Austell Brewery, Superfast Cornwall, BT and
University College Falmouth.
