Asti was up 4.4% in 2002, at 68 million bottles, while Moscato d'Asti continued its upward trend, with 6.5 million bottles (+27%), a third of which were exported. Germany was down 13%, putting Italy back in first place, but the US was up 35%. At an average price per bottle of e3.5 for Asti and around e4.5 for Moscato, the total value was e350 million. Asti Consorzio president Guido Bili said: We are back at the levels achieved with the 1998 vintage, following the 1999 Millennium boom. The fall-off of the 2000 vintage was no doubt caused by the relative flop of the entire sparkling sector, including Champagne. We started the comeback with the 2001 vintage and the 2002s have consolidated the upward trend,' he said.
