Chief executive, Scotch Whisky Association SWA, Gavin Hewitt has been elected president of the European Spirits Organisation, CEPS.
The role that starts with immediate effect, will complement his full-time position.
CEPS represents the spirits industry in Europe - it comprises of 30 national associations from in 26 countries, as well as a group of spirits producing companies.
During his two-year term of office, he his priorities will be to promote, protect and grow the European spirits industry in the EU and in third markets.
? Demonstrate the EU spirit industry's commitment to social responsibility, including compliance with regulations on advertising and promotion of alcohol, and through encouraging responsible consumption.
? Ensure that the EU institutions understand the economic value of the spirits industry and, when formulating rules and regulations for the alcohol industry, do not discriminate against spirits by comparison with other alcoholic beverages.
Hewitt said: "It is an honour to be recognised by my peers in this way.
"My main objective will be to drive home to the European institutions the economic importance of the spirits sector and to secure recognition that it is living up to the high standards of responsibility."
