Both Bruno Paillard, Prsident de la Commission d'Information, and Daniel Lorson of the CIVC have confirmed that they have called a halt to a major part of the latest initiative to protect the Champagne appellation in the USA. In view of American anti-French feelings over a war with Iraq, it has been acknowledged that such a campaign could backfire. Advertisements in politically sensitive' newspapers such as The Washington Post and The New York Times were the first to be pulled, and the project as a whole is likely to be put on the back-burner until international relations between the two countries have normalised. * Champagne sales in the US, Champagne's second largest export market, were up 33% to 18 million bottles in 2002.
