Industry gears up for Fairtrade fortnight

Published:  23 July, 2008

UK: February 2008 will see the 13th Fairtrade Fortnight in action, continuing the theme: Change Today. Choose Fairtrade.

Fairtrade products saw a significant uplift in sales during Fairtrade Fortnight in 2007, and the trade is now gearing up for a repeat performance.

Licensees and retailers alike reported lines carrying the Fairtrade mark almost doubling sales during the last promotional period, while public recognition of the mark grew to 57% (TNS Omnimas).

Preparing for the next two-week campaign, to be held 25 February to 9 March 2008, more than 120 representatives from companies including the Co-op, Marks & Spencer, Sainsbury's, Waitrose, Erhmans, and Bottle Green and Gerber attended the industry-wide event run by the Fairtrade Foundation.

Last year Threshers used the two-week promotional period to launch a new range of Fairtrade wines, and the Orchid Group announced the roll-out of Fairtrade hot beverages across its 300 pubs, bars and restaurants.
