Charles Symington named fortified winemaker of the year

Charles Symington has been named fortified winemaker of the year by Portuguese publication Revista de Vinhos.

Charles Symington has been named fortified winemaker of the year by Portuguese publication Revista de Vinhos.

 

He previously won this accolade in 2006, jointly with his father Peter, whom he succeeded as the head winemaker of Symington Family Estates. Peter Symington had won the award three times.

 

Thirty excellence awards were given out, of which four went to ports. Three of those ports were made by Symington Family Estates - two Graham's wines, the 30 years tawny and 1969 single year tawny, and the 2009 Warre's port.

 

Revista de Vinhos wrote: "In Charles's case, Peter's legacy is in good hands and the wines speak for themselves, showing that the future is assured. This is cause for celebration."

Diageo has launched the first of several new expressions of Talisker.

 

Talisker Storm, described as its boldest whisky to date, has been made from rejuvenated and refill casks at different ages and is bottled at the traditional Talisker strength of 45.8% without an age statement. The rrp is £39.95.

 

Master blender Jim Beveridge said Talisker Storm delivered the distillery's character in "one vibrant dram."

 

"We sought out some great mature Talisker, enriched and mellowed by time spent in carefully rejuvenated casks, and brought that together with some very fresh distillery character preserved by maturation in refill casks," he said.

 

Further expressions of Talisker will be released later this year.

 

The full tasting notes read:

Appearance: Full gold

Nose: At first restrained yet spicy, with a hint of struck matches; fresh-clean and growing in complexity like a gathering storm to reveal a honeyed sweet maltiness with ripe red berry fruit. Eventually a little well integrated mellow smoke drifts across the scene as a wild sea turns up briny, fresh clean notes, and an oily explosion of pepper

Body: Medium

Palate: At first sweetly mellow and rich in the mouth then quickly very spicy and increasingly stormy as the Talisker heat comes through. It's as if the pure, tongue-coating sweetness joins hands with a deep nutty smokiness to embrace those spicier notes. The flavour is elegantly drawn out with a good balance between sweetness, smoke and salt, which is all the more evident when a little water is added

Finish: Clean and of medium length, warming, with a lasting, smooth aftertaste, in which late peaty burnt embers can be found

Brancott Estate releases first limited edition Sauvignon Blanc

Pernod Ricard has launched the first limited edition Sauvingon Blanc for its Brancott Estate brand.

It has bottled 3,500 individually numbered limited edition bottles of Brancott Estate Chosen Rows Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2010 with an rrp of £35.

 

The release is the culmination of a Brancott's "icon project" which examined the world's top Sauvignon Blancs with an aim of challenging New Zealand's winemaking and viticulture practices to produce a different expression of Malborough Sauvington Blanc that could "sit alongside icons from Bordeaux, Burgundy and Loire."

 

The grapes which were chosen to produce an age-worthy wine that delivers great palate length and will slowly evolve over the coming ten years.

 

"Our understanding of complex and age-worthy natural aroma compounds of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, together with our learnings of the soil types on Brancott Vineyard, has given us a unique opportunity to create this prestigious wine - the pinnacle of our winemaking," said Patrick Materman, Brancott Estate's chief winemaker.

 

"This project has been, and will continue to be, a long journey of discovery, involving many people working together to challenge every step of New Zealand's winemaking and viticulture practices from the past four decades. The release of Brancott Estate Chosen Rows is testament to our on-going commitment to Marlborough and our pioneering vision, which led us to create the original Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc nearly 40 years ago."
