The company first launched the gin in the early 2000s as a limited edition, and it is set to roll out a limited run of 100,000 bottles from February.

 

It is a blend of botanicals and spices and it stems from Charles Tanqueray's 1839 recipe, which was found in a travel journal documenting journeys from Europe to the East Indies.

 

Tanqueray master distiller Tom Nichol said: "Since announcing the return of Tanqueray Malacca we've witnessed real excitement among bartenders who are keen to get their hands on this unique limited edition gin. I've been asked many times over the years for this gin to be brought back by Tanqueray and I'm pleased to now be making that happen."

 

The official launch events hosted by Tom Nichol will take place in February in New York, San Francisco and London at secret locations.

 

Tanqueray Malacca will be available for sale in the US, Spain, Germany, UK, Benelux, the Nordics and Western Europe. Each of the 100,000 bottles will be individually numbered.

South Africa smashed its previous record to export the largest amount of wine to date in 2012.

South Africa smashed its previous record to export the largest amount of wine to date in 2012.

 

The 417 million litres exported last year is a 17% increase on 2011 and 10 million more than the previous record set in 2008.

 

The record export year is the result of favourable currency rates, as well as a significant drop in the harvests of competitor regions including Europe, South America, Australia and New Zealand.

 

Bulk exports made up 59% of volumes as local producers strived to compete globally and meet market demands.

 

"Obviously we would prefer the accent to be on packaged wines in terms of job retention in the packaging industry and also to maintain sustainable profit margins for producers.

 

"We are therefore greatly encouraged by the recent growth of packaged exports to North America, Japan, China, as well as several increasingly affluent African nations, all to regions where we have been increasing our marketing investment," said Wines of South Africa chief executive Su Birch.

 

Over the past decade bulk wine exports from the New World have risen from 20% to over half of all volumes traded. "The reality we face also confronts Australia, Chile, Argentina and even New Zealand," Birch said.

 

SA Wine Industry & Information Systems (SAWIS) has predicted that the 2013 wine grape crop will weigh in at 1.38 million tonnes - the third biggest in recorded history.

 

"This is assuming that good weather conditions continue, there is a speedy and peaceful resolution to the farmworker strikes and harvests come in on time. The anticipated crop size is despite a decrease in total plantings, thanks to one of the best winter seasons in the Western Cape for many years," Birch added.

Chivas Regal has launched three limited edition products with Italian luxury car designer Pininfarina.

 

The first of the Chivas 18 by Pininfarina products is an 18 year old bottle of Chivas housed in a blue metallic-finish case with a wood veneer to represent oak barrels (RRP: £105). The second has the same design features but is made with a solid wood inlay and comes with two glasses. The Limited Edition 2 products will also be individually numbered to highlight their limited edition status (RRP: £420). The bottles will go on sale from the end of February.

 

Only five of the top-end collector's piece will go on display globally and individual pieces made to order. The design is based on a mascherone, the wooden frame originally used to shape cars.

 

"Together with Pininfarina, we have produced a range that reflects the luxury and quality credentials of both partners and celebrates the beauty of deluxe design. The limited edition range will appeal to those with an appreciation for craftsmanship, history and elegance," said Pernod Ricard marketing director Patrick Venning.

 

Chivas has previously collaborated with fashion designers Vivienne Westwood and Christian Lacroix.
