WSET TO LAUNCH SPIRITS QUALIFICATION

Published:  23 July, 2008

The Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) is set to launch a Level 2 Intermediate Certificate in Spirits this year, following two pilot spirits courses run in conjunction with Taste & Flavour. This initiative has been driven in tandem with the industry committee of the Worshipful Company of Distillers, and the support of the major spirit companies is being sought to assist the marketing of the programmes. Ian Harris, chief executive of the WSET, said: The WSET has often been criticised for not doing enough for the spirits side of education. We are delighted to be working with the Worshipful Company of Distillers to put together a formal educational programme which will lead to accredited qualifications in spirits.' He added: I have been talking to the generic spirit category bodies, such as the Scotch Whisky Association, the Gin & Vodka Association and the Consejo Regulador de Tequila, to ensure that our educational programmes dovetail with what they are trying to achieve through generic educational initiatives.' The WSET is to hold seminars during March at seven regional road shows, where the syllabus of the Intermediate Certificate in Spirits will be on the agenda.
