Supemarket group Co-op won four out of eight awards at the Fairtrade Wine Committee's annual tasting event yesterday.
Co-op Fairtrade Chilean Carmenre, made by Los Robles, won Best Overall Red. Best White was taken by Las Lomas, for its Equality Sauvignon Blanc.
The Co-op also won Best South African White for its Co-op Fairtrade Cape Sauvignon Blanc Reserve, and Best Argentinian White for Co-op Fairtrade Argentine Torrentes. The Carmenre from the retailer won Best Chilean Red.
It is something of a personal triumph for Marie Gallup, wine buyer for South Africa, Chile and Argentina at the Co-op.
According to Vicky Wood, category marketing manager for beers, wines and spirits at the Co-op: "These awards reflect the quality of our Fairtrade wine range, and the hard work of our wine team.
Judges at the awards included wine journalists David Williams and Christine Austin.
The Fairtrade Wine Committee consists of Fairtrade wine importers, distributors and retailers.
