The Royal Tokaji Wine company is now handling its own sales in the UK, as from 1 September 2001. Formerly with Mentzendorff, the company has formed an association with Domaines Baron de Rothschild. Its sales office will be based at its London headquarters in St James's Place and will be directed by Ben Howkins, assisted by Catherine Bramwell. Susanne Bury will be responsible for administration and Patricia Parnell will continue as marketing and public relations consultant. Viscount Astor, chairman of The Royal Tokaji Wine Company, said: "It will give us complete control of the sales and marketing of our brand in the UK, the primary market for Royal Tokaji." Royal Tokaji will work with a small team of "preferred wholesalers" and will continue to supply larger customers direct from their Hungarian office in Md. Distribution in the UK will be serviced by London City Bond. An "upscale promotional and public relations programme" has been developed for the pre-Christmas period, to develop sales in the on- and off-trade and increase consumer awareness. The Royal Tokaji Wine company, which only makes Asz wines of five puttonyos or more, claims to own the greatest collection of classed-growth, single-estate vineyards in the Tokaji region, including: Birsalmas, Betsek, Szt Tamas, Nyulasz and Mzesmly. In exceptional vintages Royal Tokaji makes one of the finest Tokaji Asz Esszencia wines through traditional winemaking techniques.
