Record harvest for South Africa

South Africa is expecting a record harvest.

South Africa is expecting a record harvest.

The 2013 wine grape harvest is expected to reach 1 491 432 tons - 5.4% up on 2012.

The harvest took place later than usual and over a shorter period of time.

Vinpro described 2013 as a 'particularly healthy year with effective disease and pest control'.

Larger harvests are expected in all wine districts, with the exception of Robertson, and record crops are on the cards for Olifants River, Breedekloof and Worcester. After two dry and consequently smaller vintages, Malmesbury produced a bigger crop and in the Orange River district vineyards are starting to recover from the flood damage that occurred in 2011, according to Vinpro.

The total crop is 4.6% higher than the record crop in 2008. See www.vinpro.co.za for the detailed harvest report per district.
