High hopes for 2013 as Casa Silva reports ideal harvest conditions

Published:  11 March, 2013

Chilean winery Casa Silva has reported 'ideal' weather conditions for the 2013 harvest.

Text Chilean winery Casa Silva has reported 'ideal' weather conditions for the 2013 harvest.

Picking began on February 26, three days earlier than 2012, with Sauvignon Gris from the Centenary Vineyards in Casa Silva's Angostura Estate.

Managing director Pablo Silva said: "I'm very happy to report that we have had ideal weather conditions for harvest this year - we have had very fresh mornings and a few hours of daytime sunshine. We have had no rain and the nights have been quite cold which we are thankful for at this stage, as it will help preserve the grapes' fruitiness and acidity giving us high hopes for 2013.

"Within a week we had finished all of the Sauvignon Gris and transported it to the cellar. The wines during the fermentation are showing very good pH levels, with very good fruit in the first tastings."

The Sauvignon Blanc harvest started on March 4, five days later than in 2012.

"So far we have harvested 30% of the fruit from Angostura and Lolol and I'm pleased with the results as the fruit is showing high quality and excellent acidity," added Silva.

The Chardonnay harvest from Lolol began on March 7, also five days later than 2012.

Silva said: "Considering the concerns surrounding the Chardonnay variety, I'm pleased to say that the fruit is very healthy and again is showing good levels of acidity.

"This is a very good year for plant health, particularly among the varieties that we haven't yet picked. Fruit quality is high, and we are particularly excited about our Syrah, Carmenère, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. We also expect to pick excellent quality Pinot Noir in the cooler locations, for example in our vineyards in Paredones, just 6km from the coast."
