Following on from a successful 2016 when New Zealand (along with Argentina) topped the UK growth charts, the country is now keen to develop its presence in the UK market at its the annual trade tasting in London next week.
New Zealand has managed to buck the trend of decline in the overall UK wine market thanks in part to the success of Sauvignon blanc, but now the country is keen to stress the diversity of its regions and grape varieties.
Over 500 wines from more than 90 producers will be on show at Monday's tasting (January 16), including on two self pour discovery tables which will offer the chance to taste a range of wines comparing regions and vintages and styles.
One table will show 16 Pinot Noirs through six regions with a range of vintages from 2011 to 2015.
Peter McCombie MW will be hosting a Pinot Noir masterclass, showcasing the regional and stylistic differences of Pinot Noir from across five regions, while Warren Gibson of Trinity Hill will be hosting World Class Chardonnay from Hawke's Bay, with eight producers involved.
There will also be a spotlight on New Zeland's growing organic wine scene and the opportunity to meet with producers seeking representation in the UK.
New Zealand has a successful backdrop to work with following a strong performance in in the UK last year.
New Zealand wine experienced considerable growth in both volume (+15.9%) and value (+13.2%) in 2016 while keeping the average bottle at an impressive £7.14 (Nielsen Scantrack data to 5.11.16)
Additionally, New Zealand has managed to escape the trend of decline in the overall UK wine market.
Since June 2012, the overall market has fallen by 10% in volume and 1.5% by value, while New Zealand has grown by nearly 10% volume and 24% value over the same period.
