Car Boot heads to South Africa in producer link at Cape Wine

Published:  17 June, 2015

The Wine Car Boot event concept will be making its first foray overseas in a link with a South African producer group in the autumn.

Car Boot founder Ruth Spivey will be joining forces with Premium Independent Wineries of South Africa during Cape Wine on September 13.

The event will be held at PIWOSA member Journeys End in Stellenbosch and all 13 of the producers that make up the organisation will be showcasing their wines.

The event will be open to trade visitors to Cape Wine and members of the public, with proceeds going to a local community charity.

Spivey launched Wine Car Boot in 2013 and has been holding regular events across London since then, at which independent wine merchants sample and sell their stock.

PIWOSA chairman Rollo Gabb said: "This is a time when the spotlight will be shining on the South African industry and PIWOSA looks forward to demonstrating the fantastic quality being produced in the Cape today."

Spivey added: "I've always wanted to take Wine Car Boot beyond London and the UK and what better place to start than the Cape.

"With family links to South Africa, I've been a lover, lister and consumer of South African wines for may years.

"It's shaping up to be a fun-filled, free-flowing day, showcasing some of the best producers in the country."

The day will include a "wine Olympics" with spitting, barrel rolling and grape and spoon races.

There is also a plan to use a medieval-style catapult called a trebuchet owned by Journeys End to fling the car selling the least wine into the air at the end of the day.

PIWOSA's full members list comprises Cederberg Cellar, Drift Farm, Glenelly Estate, Jordan Wine Estate, Journeys End, Ken Forrester Vineyards, Klein Constantia, Mulderbosch Vineyards, Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines, Paul Cluver Wines, Raats Family Wines, The Winery of Good Hope and Newton Johnson Wines.
