Glenmorangie Pride 1978 is my finest whisky yet, says Dr Bill Lumsden

Published:  11 July, 2014

Glenmorangie claims its new release, Pride 1978, which has been extra matured in casks of Grand Cru claret wine, is its most exclusive launch yet and follows on the success of the Pride 1981 which was released in 2011.

The distiller is so proud of Pride 1978, which retails at £3,500, as not only is it releasing a 34 year-old whisky, it has for the last 15 years been extra extra-matured in rare special casks that held French Grand Cru claret wine - the longest ever period a Glenmorangie whisky has undergone extra-maturation.

Only 700 bottles are being released worldwide of Pride 1978, as only five casks were laid down.

Dr Bill Lumsden, director of distilling and whisky creation at Glenmorangie, which is part of Moët Hennessy UK,
believes this is the finest whisky he has produced to date.

He said: "The whisky's birth date, as its name implies, was 1978. This is when the original liquid was distilled for maturation in Glenmorangie's finest oak casks transforming the liquid into a vintage 19 year old. After a further 15 years of extra-maturation in five precious casks, Pride 1978 was bottled in 2012.

"The resulting liquid is a luxurious burnished copper with rich, decadent and delicious scents of chestnut, toffee and cherries. I believe this is my most exquisite expression yet, one that will be savoured by whisky enthusiasts across the globe."

Anyone buying the rare malt will also receive a unique limited edition signed print created by internationally acclaimed artist, Idris Khan, entitled 'Disappearing Casks'.

The artwork depicts Glenmorangie's distinctive whisky barrels at its distillery in Tain.

Khan takes up the story: "When visiting their distillery in Tain I was immediately mesmerised. The vision of the casks has stayed with me and provided inspiration for 'Disappearing Casks'. I was born the same year that the casks were laid down and it feels very fitting that I am helping to tell its story."

The 700 decanters of Pride 1978 were released on July 9.

The £3,900 whisky will be available through specialist whisky merchants and Glenmorangie stockists.
